What Makes Waluaa Different? A Closer Look at Our Approach to Surf and Yoga Retreats
When people begin searching for a surf and yoga retreat, the options can feel endless. Bali, Costa Rica, Portugal, Nicaragua — the list goes on, and many retreats promise similar experiences: waves, yoga classes, good food, and beautiful scenery.
So the question naturally comes up:
What actually makes one retreat different from another?
At Waluaa, this is something we’ve spent years refining. Our goal has never been to create the biggest retreat, the busiest schedule, or the most “Instagrammable” experience. Instead, we’ve focused on building something more intentional — a retreat that feels personal, grounded, and deeply connected to the place where it happens: Santa Catalina, Panama.
Here’s what truly sets Waluaa apart…
Small Groups That Keep the Experience Personal
One of the most important choices we’ve made is to keep our retreats intentionally small. Each Waluaa retreat is capped at a maximum of 10 guests. While many surf camps host much larger groups, we’ve found that smaller numbers change the entire experience — in the best way.
With a small group:
• Guests receive more individual attention during surf coaching
• Instructors can tailor sessions to different skill levels
• Conversations flow naturally at shared meals
• The week feels relaxed rather than scheduled and rushed
It also allows guests to genuinely get to know one another. Many people arrive alone, but by the end of the week it’s common to see new friendships formed both in the water and around the table. Small groups allow the retreat to feel less like a program — and more like a shared experience.
A 2:1 Surfer-to-Coach Ratio in the Water
Surf coaching can vary widely depending on the retreat. At some places, large groups enter the water together with minimal individual guidance. At Waluaa, we prioritize something different: a 2:1 surfer-to-coach ratio. This means that for every two surfers in the water, there is one dedicated coach providing guidance.
Why does this matter?
Surfing is a highly technical sport. Small adjustments in positioning, timing, or body movement can dramatically improve a surfer’s confidence and success in the water.
With more focused coaching, guests receive:
• Real-time feedback during sessions
• Support navigating the lineup
• Individual advice based on their current level
• Encouragement when trying something new
For beginners, this creates a much safer and more supportive introduction to the ocean. For intermediate surfers, it often leads to faster progress and more meaningful breakthroughs.
Instructors Who Truly Know Santa Catalina
Another key difference at Waluaa is our connection to the local surf community. Many of our surf coaches are from Santa Catalina itself or have spent years surfing and working in the area. They know the reefs, tides, and swell patterns in ways that only come from long experience. This local knowledge makes a big difference.
Conditions change constantly along the Pacific coast, and understanding when and where to surf can transform a session from frustrating to incredible. Beyond surf knowledge, our team also helps guests understand the culture and character of the town — something that can’t be replicated by instructors who are only visiting briefly.
Santa Catalina isn’t just where we run retreats — It’s where our team lives, surfs, and spends their everyday life.
A Team That Returns Season After Season
Along with our local coaches, many of our yoga instructors and retreat hosts return to Waluaa year after year. Some live in Santa Catalina full-time. Others travel here seasonally and have developed a deep connection to the community and environment.
This consistency helps create something that guests often notice right away:
A retreat atmosphere that feels grounded and authentic.
Our team isn’t simply rotating through for short-term jobs. They’re invested in the experience, the town, and the people who visit. That energy naturally shapes the retreat environment in ways that are hard to manufacture.
Supporting the Local Community
Running a retreat in a small surf town comes with responsibility. From the beginning, Waluaa has prioritized working closely with local businesses and community members.
Many parts of the retreat experience are made possible through these relationships, including:
• Local restaurants providing fresh, regional meals
• Boat captains guiding snorkeling trips to nearby islands
• Local drivers assisting with transportation
• Community partners supporting excursions and activities
By collaborating with the people who live and work in Santa Catalina, retreats become something that benefits the broader town — not just visiting guests. For us, supporting the local community isn’t a marketing idea. It’s simply part of being a good neighbor.
Three Unique Places to Stay
Waluaa offers three different retreat locations, each designed for a slightly different style of experience. Some guests prefer to stay close to town with a more social atmosphere. Others are looking for a quieter, more luxurious environment surrounded by nature.
Our retreat accommodations include:
• Classic Oceanfront – steps from the famous La Punta wave, with a Panamanian feel
• Tropical Villas – private, garden-surrounded villas offering quiet comfort
• Beachfront Hideaway – a more secluded and international setting tucked into nature
Each location shares the same retreat programming but allows guests to choose the environment that best matches their travel style.
Retreats That Balance Surf, Yoga, and Rest
Surf and yoga retreats sometimes fall into the trap of doing too much. Packed schedules, early wake-ups every day, and constant activities can leave guests feeling exhausted by the end of the week. At Waluaa, we approach the balance differently.
Surf sessions and yoga classes are designed to support each other rather than compete for energy. Surfing challenges the body and nervous system in dynamic ways. Yoga helps improve mobility, recovery, and mental focus. Combined thoughtfully, they create a rhythm where guests feel energized rather than overwhelmed.
Just as important, we intentionally leave space in the schedule for rest, exploration, and spontaneous moments. Sometimes the most memorable parts of a retreat happen outside the planned activities.
Did you know? We also pride ourselves in offering Yoga Only or Surf Only options during our retreats — allowing you be to fully immersed in the full retreat, but choosing to focus on your specific interests.
Why Santa Catalina Is the Perfect Setting
Ultimately, much of what makes Waluaa special comes from the place itself. Santa Catalina is still a small surf town on Panama’s Pacific coast, known for its consistent waves, warm water, and relaxed atmosphere. Unlike many surf destinations that have grown rapidly, the town has retained a sense of simplicity and community.
Visitors quickly notice things like:
• Friendly lineups in the water
• Quiet streets and jungle surroundings
• Sunsets that gather people on the beach each evening
• A welcoming surf culture that values respect in the lineup
It’s the kind of place where it’s easy to slow down and reconnect, with nature, with others, and with yourself.
The Heart of Waluaa
At the end of the day, what makes Waluaa different isn’t just the surf coaching, the yoga classes, or the beautiful setting. It’s the intention behind how everything is designed.
Small groups.
Personal guidance.
A deep connection to the town and community.
These choices create an experience that feels human, supportive, and real — something many travelers are searching for in a world that often moves too fast. And that’s exactly the kind of retreat we’ll continue building here in Santa Catalina.
